Deborah Santa Cruz grew up in South Minneapolis near Sabathani Community Center, where she attended Bryant Junior High School. She later returned to Sabathani to participate in its programs.
Deborah worked with children with special needs at Minneapolis Public Schools before transitioning to a teacher’s assistant role at Bright Water Montessori. After retiring and recovering from COVID-19, she sought a meaningful way to stay active and connected to her community.
She began participating in Sabathani’s senior programs and enjoyed the experience so much that she became a volunteer. Her dedication and enthusiasm led to an invitation to participate in the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), providing an opportunity to expand her knowledge and continue serving others.
This experience eventually led to her new role as a Community Health Worker at Sabathani. Her work focuses on health education, screenings, exercise, and referrals to connect community members with ongoing care and services.
For Deborah, this role is a meaningful way to give back to the community that helped shape her.
“I enjoy working with seniors because I learn from them while they learn from me. Giving back to my community is very fulfilling.”
