Nearly three<\/span> years have passed since the tragic murder of George Floyd and the <\/span>subsequent<\/span> uprising that swept the nation. <\/span>As we look at the 38th Street corridor, it becomes <\/span>evident<\/span> that progress has been slow.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0It <\/span>brings to mind<\/span> the areas in South Los Angeles that are still struggling to recover from the Rodney King Riots, more than three decades later. <\/span>It is imperative that we, as a community, take action now to uplift South Minneapolis and create a better future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sabathani<\/span> Community Center <\/span>has developed a comprehensive plan to rebuild the community. With the support of the state of Minnesota, we can build back better and pave the way for lasting change.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Investing in the Community<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

To bring about meaningful change, we need the state of Minnesota to invest in the South Minneapolis community. Sabathani has presented a funding bill, currently awaiting approval in the Minnesota legislature, which aims to support a holistic approach to public safety. This approach focuses on housing, employment, and targeted services for Black men and families within our community. <\/span>By securing this funding, we can enhance and expand our existing programs, including personal empowerment training, career pathways and employment for youth, senior programming to prevent isolation, and a workforce mentorship and career training program. These initiatives will empower individuals, bridge the opportunity gap, and foster resilience within our community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Becoming a Trusted Conduit <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Sabathani not only provides vital programs and services but also serves as a trusted conduit for communication within the community. As an organization deeply rooted in South Minneapolis, we understand the unique needs, challenges, and aspirations of our fellow community members. By effectively connecting with the community, we can ensure that their voices are heard and that their concerns are addressed. <\/span>We appreciate the interest shown by our city and state in learning how to better support us, but there is still more work to be done.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Time for Action <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The time for action is now. We must change the narrative surrounding the 38th Street Corridor and move from mere survival to strength and prosperity. The recent announcement from the World Health Organization that COVID-19 is no longer classified as an emergency reminds us of the power of collective action. It raises the question: What if Minnesota invested in addressing racial injustice with the same urgency and determination as they did with the pandemic? Such investment could pave the way for eradicating systemic inequities, building stronger and safer communities, and providing equal opportunities for all.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your Role in Creating Change<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

You have the power to make a difference. Today, we urge you to advocate for the funding bill HF 3046<\/a>.<\/strong> This crucial bill, authored by Representative Frazier<\/a>, aims to allocate $2 million towards a health-focused approach to public safety in South Minneapolis. It is essential to reach out to key legislators, including Senator Champion<\/a>, Chair of the Jobs and Economic Development Committee, Senator Pappas<\/a>, Chair of the Capital Investment Committee, and Representative Fateh<\/a>, Representative Hassan<\/a>, and Representative Gomez<\/a>, who represent our district. <\/span><\/p>\n

By actively engaging with these legislators and supporting the bill, you contribute to the upliftment of our South Minneapolis community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
